Antonyms & Synonyms for Tried it Tuesday!

Photobucket

Linking up with Holly for Tried it Tuesday!

My students were needing a quick review of antonyms and synonyms (and I was sick of being asked, "which one means similar?"). So I tried some pinterest inspired ideas  :)

Reviewing Synonyms - we made the synonym flowers with the paint samples. So much fun and my kids were able to refresh their Thesaurus skills as well.

Reviewing Antonyms - I took Easter eggs and broke them apart and mixed the colors up. On the top section I wrote an antonym that matched with an antonym on the bottom section. I broke them all apart and threw them in a basket. In their groups they had to match up the antonyms and write the words down on their paper. My students loved it!!!

That is my Tried it Tuesday! What do you do to review synonyms and antonyms??

  1. I love creative ideas like this to review a concept! I can just see the students diving right into those eggs to match up the antonyms! So cool. Thank you for linking up and sharing this great strategy to get students excited about learning:)

  3. The egg idea is great! I just went out yesterday about bought 200 eggs to keep back for next year. Now I know what I can do with some of them.

To help my kiddos remember the difference I taught them a movement. For synonym they bring their hands together at their chest and say "synonym same" and then for antonym they extend their arms and say "antonym opposite". If you teach this be prepared because anytime I say the words synonym or antonym all 20 kids start saying/doing this over and over!

Its great to find another upper elementary blogger. I'm your newest follower!

  5. I love the Easter Egg activity! I'm going to have to see if the stores have some on sale now that the holidays are over. Great idea! Those would probably be great for contractions as well... so many possibilities!
