Welcome to everyone following the Pass the Torch linky! I am extremely excited to tell you about the success my classroom has been enjoying by using The Reading Olympians program!

Before I get started let me give you a super brief intro to my room:
-I teach at a middle school
-I see 110 students for ELA everyday
-My class periods are only 52 minutes

Now let's get going!!

I started with the Nike set and wanted to print this BEAUTIFUL page in color for all my students. (Isn't it cute?)

But, like I mentioned above...110 students. So I just copied it off on bright, fun orange paper since the color for the Nike set was orange and my kids love it!

So, everyday after my students complete their 5 minute Self-Start they work on the word part of the day for 2 minutes. During this 2 minute time my kids are looking in dictionaries and intently drawing pictures to match their sentences/words! It is awesome!

Then, as a class we go over the daily word part and have a great conversation! (I'm almost finished with the Nike set of 10 word parts and my students have asked the best questions EVERYDAY!) I put the word part of the day on the Smart Board and we fill in the definition and 3 of 5 words as a class. I just throw it up there in PDF form and fill it out as we talk.

My higher students have this already completed within the 2 minutes beforehand, but enthusiastically join in the conversation while my lower students are learning by listening to the conversation and writing. There is always some serious "teach to the high and review to the low" going on. I'M LOVING IT! My students are required to come up with 2 words on their own and do the sentence and picture by themselves.

While they are finishing up I walk around and give immediate feedback. This takes me a total of 4 minutes everyday and my students have already started to retain and reuse the information. The Reading Olympians is definitely a keeper for me! I love it because everything is already done for you and all the teacher needs to do is print the materials and jump in.

  1. I enjoyed taking a look into your classroom! I had been worried about the time frame, and I really like how you've stretched it out somthatyou don't lose valuable class time. We're in full out testing review mode so I will continue to work on it with my lower students only, but I'm excited for next year's possibilities.

  4. I would love to be your newest follower-could you add an email subscription button for me??? :)

I currently teach 5/6 grade history, but "might" teach 6th grade all subjects next year. I did teach 6th ELA for 2 years, but if I do this next year I'm going to be dynamic! HA!
