All Summer in a Day & November Currently

Linking up with Farley for November's Currently! Amazing how fast this year has went. If you haven't linked up yet, head on over.

This week we read a short story by Ray Bradbury called "All Summer in a Day" and my students loved it, but were mad at the same time. If you have never read this story, Google it. This story is one of those that you completely enjoy, but are frustrated with because of the characters lack of understanding. The discussion after this story is ALWAYS fun and enlightening.

Quick summary: Margot lives on Venus where acid rain falls constantly except for one hour every seven years. She moved to Venus five years ago and misses the feel of the sun. The other kids have only heard about the sun and have no idea why Margot is so anxious to go outside. Right before the sun is scheduled to appear, the other kids lock Margot in a closet and then forget about her while they experience for themselves the wonders of the sun.

Lesson Overview

-Introduce sketch: What makes your world? (will be done at home)
-Review inferring equation:   Clues from text + background knowledge = inference
-Read story while making inferences

-Discuss story and remind students about sketch, which generated a ton of discussion

  1. Mmmm...Lemon bars :) Laminated stuff is the worst, especially if you have a ton of little pieces to cut out. I always save it for parent volunteers. Good luck on getting it done!
